Angry Ip Scanner is a tool wich will checo if hosts on a certain ip range are up or not, you can actually use it as a port scanner too but i dont recommend this since nmap is way better for that. it is damn fast to check if the hosts are up or not (even on windows). The good parts of this program are: Its damn fast, it's free, it's portable (so no installation required, you can just keep it on a usb stick) and there is a version for windows, linux and mac, and its a small download (the biggest version the windows one is 1.2 MB).

download the right files depending on your OS.
Make sure you have Java installed on your computer. Just download the files and extract them, open the executable file. This is all you needa do to install it on your computer. When opening it I would recommend changing the prefernces to 254 threads
Let's say we wanna scan our lan network:
and the lan goes from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254
then next to ip range you type: 192.168.1.1
and next to there will be another box and there you type: 192.168.1.254
after some very quick scanning you will get all hosts that are up and most of the hostnames.
